The custom branch of the Gray Goats Rod and Custom tree (A 1963 Buick Special two door)


 

Ok so this blog is called Gray Goats Rod and Custom and while my 27 Chevy bucket covers the rod portion this 1963 Buick two door will be the first custom section.  Plans for this car include fender skirts, some modified trim, an updated power train, a complete suspension renovation and a few other custom touches.  The idea is long, lean and low and while I'm not much good at digital editing the picture below is a modified picture of someone else's car with skirts, removed antenna and gas filler door and slight changes to the font and rear trunk edges
Two tone paint with some traditional custom touches is the current plan though color choices change regularly.  Hope you enjoy and stay tuned as both the 27 C bucket information and the 63 Special will be updated as regularly as possible.

Frame horns!

 So yesterday The front cross member found it's home, today I refilled the old gas bottles and bent and trimmed the frame rails around the cross member.  Double checking after all this heating and beating revealed that the frame was still square, measuring 114" from corner to corner.  A quick check with a digital level revealed the top edge of the frame is still dead level in every direction. Why I changed a 1923 T into a 1927 C bucket roadster

  Ok so this post is a bit out of order but like I said on the opening page it is different from your average blog in that things posted have already happened so the order of posting is a bit flexible. I have been asked to detail more clearly where I deviated from the original Chevrolet design and why.       I made some changes for aesthetics and some for more practical reasons.   My basic theory comes from examining the cars I really like and trying to figure out why I found them so appealing.   Watching an interview with Chip Foose one day he condensed his design theory into a simple form even I could understand.   Basically it consists of looking at the overall design and taking away any ugly or distracting parts while improving the overall flow of the vehicle.   Anything that stands out as out of place or disturbs the flow of the lines should be fixed.   Details should appear only on close examination but should disappear when you ...

Cheap work area expansion or the Taj Ma Tarp!

  Currently Gray Goats Rod and Custom works out of a modest 30 x 40 two car shop located on a piece of country property.  But this was not always the case.  The early years of the C buckets development took place in a VERY cramped single car garage.  The driveway was available on rain free days, but the southern sun can be brutal and I had to find an inexpensive solution.  Thus the Taj Ma Tarp was born.  A trip to Harbor Freight for a 12 x 12 tarp (I think it was 12x12 its been a while as I type this) with a stop at Home Depot for s couple lengths of electric conduit, a little rope and I was in business. Inside the garage door some screw in hooks I had laying around were screwed into the beam over the door to catch the grommets in the tarps edge.    Three equal length sections of conduit were cut and the ends compressed in a vice around a 16d nail with the head exposed.  This point is to go through the grommets on the corners of the tarp.
