The frame gets it's front cross member!


 Brief entry today, the front frame horns were trimmed but alas, no gas in the torches so I couldn't bend the tabs down to trim and tack them.  The frame did measure exactly square and the digital level registered 0 degrees in every direction!  Not bad for a 3/4" particle board building table on an old 6' folding table.

 So it took a while but I'm finally able to get back on the C bucket frame.  I have cut outs that match the profile of the rear of the body and made spacers to hold the side panels apart the proper distance so that the top and bottom strips will fit properly The uprights were then placed evenly from each corner of the rear main frame and tacked in place.

Locating the spring mount

 All the available literature specifies a 5-7 degree positive angle compared to the frames top line with most recommending 5 degrees so that is what I will use on mine.  The question is how to hold the spring mount at 5 degrees, while being sure it is centered on the front tube.   So I found the center, double checked that the frame rails were level Then I made sure it was centered and made this contraption to hold it and have it adjustable. Adjusting the angle is as simple as turning the bolt until the angle finder reads 5 degrees.  Both the frame and mount angle were double checked with a digital level.

Making a Bucket body deeper

 In the last entry we looked at steps one and two, removing the 1923 style cowl and widening the rear of the body by 6".  In this entry we will cover the steps needed to cut the body along its length and rejoin it adding 4" to the depth of the body.  After marking the appropriate location for the cut a massive "haircut" ensued. Small sections of scrap plywood were screwed in place and the removed section carefully mounted 4" above their previous location and backward so that the rear curvature of the body was maintained. As before foil backed tape was used to fill the gaps.  Perhaps not an elegant solution but it does work. Of course when the first glass is laid inside, the wood strips are removed and the holes they left are likewise filled. Well that covers the increase in depth, stand by next entry as we modify the already 3" wider cowl adding just over 4" in height allowing it to align with the now deeper body.
